26-36 AD bronze prutah of Pontius Pilate

Pontius Pilate was the Roman procurator in Jerusalem who presided over the trial of Jesus. He favored flogging Jesus as a subversive, and only ordered the crucifixion to placate the mob. Two types available. 29 AD depicts a bundle of barley ears and a ladle. The 30-31 AD type depicts the lituus, or curved auger's staff. Condition is fine, and better than the average dug out of the ground in Israel.

About 23 mm diameter The silver shekel, or tetradrachm, from the city of Tyre, was the type of coin required to pay taxes into the temple in Jerusalem. When Judas was paid for the betrayal of Christ this is the coin available from the temple.

about 13 mm, Obverse: double cornucopiae, ear of barley between. Reverse: Hebrew "Mattatayah" in wreath. Always very crude on small thick planchets. This is one out of 400 coins for superior quality. $377 reduced to $247 to adjust for the poor economy. We also have not holdered VG to Fine coins for only $27.

69-79 AD brass sestertius Judaea Capta

about 32 mm diameter, Struck 71 AD Rome mint. Obverse: laureate bust of Vespasian. The Roman general in the East (under Nero) when the Jewish Revolt broke out. After the suicide of Nero, Vespasian returned to Rome to pursue his ambitions, leaving his son Titus to continue the war in the Holy Land.

The second reign of Justinian II, the first emperor to put the image of Christ on any coin, anywhere. The first reign of Justinian II showed a European, straight haired and bearded bust of Christ. This second reign portrait shows a more realistic Aramaic man. Some scholars believe this image was copied from a near lifetime portrait of Christ on the wall of a Syrian monastery.
