Jonathan K. Kern Company

Rare gold, silver, and bronze coins Greek, Roman, and USA

COINS GROUPED BY HISTORICAL PERIODS

Part of the pleasure of owning an ancient coin is that the coin is a real connection with history. Such a coin has been in the hands of people long since dead; it may have been used in trade or kept for financial security.  It exists today due to being hidden intentionally or to being buried under tragic circumstances.  With this in mind, brief  histories of our ancient coins have been prepared and accompany each purchase of a group of coins or of single coins.

Folles of the Tetrarchy

Christianity in Transition; From Persecution to Salvation:
In 296 AD, Diocletian reformed the currency of the Roman empire by introducing a new coin, the FOLLIS (plural, FOLLES).  FOLLES, made of silver and copper, soon replaced the older currency and were minted and used from London to Syria.   We are pleased to offer a selection of choice FOLLES from a hoard which was probably buried in 307 AD.
