Officially titled the "Serene Republic of Venice," this city of islands essentially
controlled the Mediterranean Sea from 1100 A.D. to the 1700s. The city and all its
trading enclaves all over the Mediterranean were ruled by the Venetian merchant
class as an oligarchy. The Doge (or Duke) of Venice held the nominal power with the
consent of all the other wealthy families. The Venetians were the most efficient
sailors, explorers and merchants of the late Middle Ages and Renaissance, and their
fortunes grow vast as they traded with Roman Catholic Western Europe, the Greek
Orthodox Byzantine Empire and the Islamic Dynasties circling the Mediterranean.
The Venetians developed good commercial working relationships with hundreds of
seaports both small and large. Dozens of trade routes from the North, South, East
and West led goods into the Venetians galleys, which delivered fresh merchandise
to the most willing buyers. Silks and spices from the East were the glamour goods
worth their weight in gold, but tons of foodstuffs, woven goods and mundane items
were moved back and forth across the sea, all for a fee of course.
The military power of Venice centered on the Navy, as well as their efficient (and
profitable) transport of their Western allies' armies. Several of the Crusader armies
were ferried closer to the Holy Land, but the Venetians were actually responsible for
the sack of Christian Constantinople in 1204. The fourth Crusade was diverted from
any religious virtue by the greed of the Doge Enrico Dandolo. The Byzantine Empire
was a declining power, but still held strategic trading locations, most importantly the
ancient Eastern Roman capital of Constantinople. The disdain of the Catholic West
for the Orthodox East, the economic competition between the Greeks and the
Venetians; and the irresistible temptation of amazing loot for the Crusaders all made
Enrico Dandolo's mission possible. Many great treasures were carried away to the
West, including the four ancient bronze horses of St. Mark's. Constantinople never
recovered from the disaster, and the Venetians effectively replaced the old Roman
trading routes to the East.

In order to fund their vast commercial enterprises Venice struck huge quantities
of their gold Ducat, a coin about 20 millimeters in diameter and weighing 3.5 grams
of near pure gold. The Venetian Ducat was also later known as a Zecchino, named
after the Mint at the palace "La Zecca." The Doge Enrico Dandolo introduced the
Ducat about 1280 A.D. and set the standard of purity and respect for coinage for the
next 700 years. The obverse of the coin depicts the Doge of Venice kneeling before
St. Mark, the Patron Saint of Venice. Legend has that the actual remains of St. Mark
were brought to Venice by a merchant from Alexandria, Egypt. In abbreviated Latin
the legend has the name of the Dodge, and "Sacred money of Venice." The reverse
legend reads "may this Royal Ducat be dedicated to Thee, O Christ" around an
image of Christ, nimbalo, standing, surrounded by the stars of Heaven, holding his
right hand in Benediction and a book of Gospels in his left. The last of the Venetian
Ducats were struck in 1797 when Napoleon occupied Northern Italy. The weight
standard of 3.5 grams of near (98.6%) was adopted by hundreds of cities, regions,
and countries and was the important trade coin for hundreds of years, and even
today the Austrian Mint still strikes the gold Ducat as a gold bullion coin.

OLO
The Venetian exploring and trading spirit was perhaps best exemplified by Marco
Polo, who for 24 years traveled the trade routes of the mysterious East in search of
the sources of silk, spices and other exotic goods. Marco Polo, his father and uncle
left Venice in 1271 A.D. on his long odyssey to the far court of Kublai Khan, the most
powerful ruler in Asia. His written accounts are some of the most intriguing medieval
travel adventures written, and helped fuel the explorations which resulted in the
discovery of the New World two hundred years later. Venetian merchants like the
Polos would have had gold to spend like this hoard of 14th Century Ducats which
recently appeared on the market and now provide the collector with a special
opportunity to own one of these fabulous and important medieval coins.

1793 Chain Cent, Sheldon-2, the "Beckwith
Coin." This coin turned up in London, England
in 1891, where it was purchased by
Washington, D.C. coin dealer B.H. Collins, who
held it in his personal collection until 1919. He
then sold it to the astute Dr. Beckwith for an
incredible $500. Through the 20th Century a
long line of illustrious connoisseurs, both
collectors and dealers, included this coin in
their collections. Both Henry Chapman and
B. Max Mehl kept this coin for their personal
Chain Cent. Of course Naftzger owned this
coin, but it was traded to Herman Halpern
before Jay Parrino acquired the fabulous
Naftzger collection.
This Chain Cent is my favorite 1793 Cent of all
which I have seen simply because of the near
perfection of the lustrous surfaces. It is not
fully struck on some of the very highest strands
of hair over the ear, but when I tilt the coin in
the light I see the perfectly preserved copper
surfaces (more fragile than Mint State Gold)
with shimmering cartwheel luster. This is the
coin pictured at the Large Cents for Coin World

CLASSIC WAYTE RAYMOND
COIN CARDBOARD PAGES
We lucked onto an old coin shop's inventory of Wayte
Raymond pages, made for 2 and 3-ring binders.
These were the state of the art in coin preservation
and display. The plastic slides allowed for seeing
the obverse and reverse of each coin. Care needs
to be taken not to slide the plastic across the
surfaces of the coin to avoid light scratching called
"slide marks." The slide marks were ultimately the
biggest downside of these pages. The slight sulfur
content of the cardboard created some of the
most beautiful toning known to exist on coins
of all grades. I believe most of these were made
from the 1930s to 1964.

CERTIFIED ANCIENT GOLD
PHILIP II AND THE RISE OF
THE MACEDONIAN KINGDOM
Ancient Macedonia prospered on the fringe of the classical civilization
epitomized by the Greek city-states. The monarchy of Macedonia was of
Greek descent, and Philip II, ruler from 359 to 336 BC was determined to
bring his kingdom into the mainstream of an unified Hellenistic civilization
under his leadership. He employed great thinkers at his court like Aristotle to
tutor his young son, Alexander, later known as "the Great." His first expansions
absorbed neighboring Thessaly and Thrace, whose rich mineral wealth
proved to be the paymaster to finance his professional armies.
The gold mines of Mount Pangaeum in Thrace yielded about 1,000 talents,
or 75,000 pounds a year. Philip, a military genius, led his own troops into
battle. Amazingly he survived an arrow that blinded him in one eye. The
Macedonian phalanx, his "secret weapon," was sectioned into a 16 man by 16
man square of armored foot soldiers, bristling with their 14 foot long spears.
The first five ranks leveled their spears to attack the front, and the ranks
behind rested their lances skyward on the soldiers in front to provide a barrier
against arrows. These squares of weaponry could be deployed with infinite
variety depending on the terrain and the opposing forces.
Philip's loss of an eye, according to Plutarch, the ancient historian, was
foretold by the oracle of Apollo at Delphi. Philip had looked through a
peephole into his wife's, Olympias', bedchamber, and saw her cavorting with
the god Ammon, who had assumed the form of a serpent. Further legend
claims that Alexander himself was the offspring of this union. But the oracle
warned that Philip's eye which viewed this god's visitation would be lost to
him. Plutarch speculates that Philip lost interest in Olympias after that, and
although he was proud of Alexander as his son; the bitter seeds of discontent
had been sown.
Philip, also an adept diplomat and schemer, employed various means to
advance his political ambitions. He formed alliances by marriage, (he had at
least six wives at different times). He helped provoke and aggravate the
traditional rivalries amongst the Greek city-states. His gold was useful in
bribing the disaffected elements of these southern cities. The Greeks of
Athens, Corinth, Thebes, Sparta and the other city-states certainly had not
forgotten the Persian threat from Asia Minor, and many Greeks, led by
Isocrates of Athens, saw Philip more as an ally than an enemy. In a display for
potential unification, Philip presided over the games in 346 B.C. at the
Panhellenic sanctuary at Delphi, sacred to Apollo. Philip himself was a victor in
the chariot race of the Olympic games. Demosthenes of Athens, one of the
most famous orators of all time, railed effectively against Philip and his
ambitions, so when Philip moved aggressively into Greece, Athens and
Thebes fields an army to oppose him. Too little and too late, the Greek
resistance to the Macedonians met with complete defeat at Chaeronea in 338
B.C. Philip's treaty with Thebes was harsh, but he treated Athens quite easily,
apparently out of sentiment and his respect for this center of Greek culture.
Philip's life of conquest was cut short by an assassin's blade, for in 336 B.C.
he was murdered at a wedding feast. He had been preparing to invade the
Persian empire, so possibly agents of the Great King organized the plot.
Plutarch believes that Olympias, an ex-wife and mother of Alexander the
Great, was the mastermind, and friends of Alexander that Philip and his
current wife had mistreated were the perpetrators. Plutarch also describes
another drunken feast during which Philip and Alexander exchange angry
words, Philip came close to attacking Alexander. Whoever the instigator,
Alexander was the beneficiary. At the age of 20 Alexander ascended to the
Macedonian throne and began his lifelong conquest of the known world.
The coinages in the name of Philip II were vast, and are an amazing boon
to modern collectors, since large numbers have survived in hoards. His
territories covered many prosperous territories and city states and their busy
economies required large quantities of coins. The name and coin designs of
Philip continued to be struck for 40 years after his death, partly to honor his
achievements, and partly to maintain needed coinages on the Macedonian
weight standard for those regions. Perhaps the minting of Philip's Gold Staters
alongside the Alexander's Gold Staters celebrated Philip's victories as well as
paid the ongoing expenses of his planned attack on the Persian empire. The
Gold Staters of Philip were the same 8.6 gram pure gold standard as
Alexander's.
