TEMPLE DUES
Silver half shekels of Tyre 126 BC to 55 AD. Designs exactly as the full shekels. The half shekel was the amount of dues payable by every
male Jew to the temple in Jerusalem every year. The halves are much rarer than the full shekels, which is the best indication that the
Temple treasury stored the larger more convenient bullion like full shekels. Global slabs depict the Temple and relate the history of this

Gold aureus of Titus 79-81 AD, struck 77-78 AD, while as Caesar.
When his father Vespasian returned to claim the throne in Rome
Titus was delegated the task of capturing Jerusalem. The arch of
Titus still standing in Rome depicts the victory parade displaying the
golden menorah looted from the temple. Obv: laureate bust of Titus
Rev: Roma seated on shield, holding spear, two birds flying, she

ANCIENT SHIPWRECK GOLD
Gold aureus of the emperor Aurelian 270-275 AD recovered from the
most important ancient treasure shipwreck ever found. In 1877,
1950 and 1986 groups of Roman gold coins were found on the
coast of Corsica, mostly of this emperor. The galley probably sank
271 to 275 AD. All show some signs of sea water, sand, and wave
action on the surfaces. Obv: laureate and armored bust of Aurelian
Rev: Victory advancine, holding wreath and trophy, bound captive at

Gold dinar of the great conqueror Genghis Khan struck 618 AH or
1221/22 AD at the Ghazna mint in modern Afghanistan. When
Genghis took Ghazna he massacred all except skilled metalworkers.
Perhaps this gold issue was struck by the guild of goldsmiths to
show gratitude for their lives. Gold of Genghis was unknown before
this hoard of 59 coins entered the market during the Taliban regime.

11 PRUTOT
SURCHARGE OF THE
MONEYCHANGERS
Recent research has uncovered an ancient
moneychanger's surcharge of 11 prutot on
transactions involving the temple dues. Jews from
other regions needed to exchange their coins into
Tyrian silver and were charged a fee. Even if two
men paid their temple dues together with a full
shekel they were charged 11 prutot extra. These
commercial activity infuriated Jesus and provoked
his outburst of anger towards the moneychangers in
the temple confines. A full shekel was worth 256 of
