THE FIRST COINS
OF THE NEW WORLD
SUPERB CONDITION SILVER
1536 to 1556 marked the first issue in the New
World of Spanish Reales at the Mexico City
mint under the Spanish rulers, Charles V and
his mother Johanna. These silver 4 Reales
are the pick of a large hoard and have
wonderful strikes and planchets. The waves
are so detailed you can just imagine Spanish
galleons laded with New World silver sailing
through the Pillars of Hercules. Only 17
available, so call quickly. About Uncirculated,
well struck on nice planchets, even medium
gray toning.........................................

THE FIRST COINS
OF THE NEW WORLD
SUPERB CONDITION SILVER
1576 to 1685 Dutch Lion Talers, circulated in
New Amsterdam (old name for New York City)
and were known colloquially as "Dog Dollars"
due to the crudeness of the design. These
had a large production because the Dutch got
the silver from the Spaniards one way or
another, in large quantities. Fine, crudely
struck, encrustation $67.;VF ............

SPANISH SILVER 8 REALES
FROM THE DUTCH
"VLIEGENHART" SUNK IN 1735
We can offer silver 8 Reales from the Mexico
City mint struck in 1730, 1731, or 1732 in
premium condition. A sea salvage coin will
show corrosion, and cobs are among the
world's worst made coins ever. Hence the
expression "rough as a cob," which doesn't
refer to a corn cob, but these very ugly but
very economically important coins. VF $197.;

CLASSIC WAYTE RAYMOND
COIN CARDBOARD PAGES
We lucked onto an old coin shop's inventory of
Wayte Raymond pages, made for 2 and 3
ring binders. These were the state of the art
in coin preservation and display. The plastic
slides allowed for seeing the obverse and
reverse of each coin. Care needs to be taken
not to slide the plastic across the surfaces of
the coin to avoid light scratching called "slide
marks." The slide marks were ultimately the
biggest downside of these pages. The slight
sulfur content of the cardboard created some
of the most beautiful toning known to exist on
coins of all grades. I believe most of these
were made from the 1930s to 1964.

EGYPTIAN GOLD HOARD
COINS STRUCK BY THE
KING OF COLLECTORS
From a wealthy Egyptian family in Swiss exile
comes a spectacular group of Proof and
Uncirculated gold struck to commemorate the
wedding of King Farouk in 1938. Farouk was
king of Egypt in a decade of despots and
tyrants, the more infamous being Hitler,
Mussolini, and Franco of Spain. Farouk
inherited Egypt from his father Ahmed Fuad
in 1936 and pretty much treated the country
and its treasury as his royal playground. As
long as he kept the Suez canal open (or
Allied transport to the Eastern reaches of the
British Empire, the western po wers supported
him.In 1952 the patience of the Egyptian
military ran out and Farouk was forced to
abdicate in a bloodless coup. The palace
entourage and old royalty were no longer
welcome in the new Egypt.
MANY, MANY MORE NEW PURCHASES
Jonathan Kern
EGYPTIAN GOLD HOARD
COINS STRUCK BY THE
KING OF COLLECTORS
With the unlimited budget to satisfy his whims
Farouk amassed the largest of coins ever. If
he didn't have one, he wanted it.Ancient
Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Persian and all
medieval kingdoms were represented.Every
ruler, every mint, every variety, every coin
ever struck anywhere in the world, ever.
Every foreign coin ever struck, and of course
every U.S. coin ever struck.Every
denomination, year, mint and of course his
legendary pattern collection including many
unique gold patterns. The major dealers in
France, Switzerland, the Netherlands,
England and the United States supplied the
royal palace with consignments of hundreds
of thousands of dollars worth of coins when a
U.S. dollar bought ten times what it does now.
The dealers found out that a package over
$10,000 went to a palace bureaucrat's office
loaded with red tape, and probably
"baksheesh", and took a year or two to get
paid, so nobody cut Farouk a good deal, and
in real dollar terms he probably paid the most
ever for the world's largest collection ever.
The clever dealers soon learned to send
multiple packages of $9,500 each, since they
went through a different bureaucrat's office
and invoices were paid in maybe six months
or so.
Farouk also collected every stamp of the world,
snuff boxes, objects of vertu, watches and
automata, telescopes, and basically any
object or artwork with precious metals and
jewels, preferably large gold and platinum
diamond studded objects, like Carl Faberge
Easter eggs. There was a massive gold stand
to hold two Coca Cola bottles which hadbeen
given to him by the company as a gift for the
concession of the Egyptian bottling rights.
When Farouk left, the majority of his vast
holdings became the property of the new
republic, which had no interest in trinkets not
of Egyptian cultural value, so his collections
went to the auction block. Abe Kosoff wrote a
wonderful series for Coin World about his
adventures at one of the biggest giveaways of
all time at the palace auction.

These spectacular Staters are from an amazing hoard of gold Staters, bequeathed by the
Scythian King Koson's widow, from norther n Thrace, to the war chests of Brutus and his
republican allies in their struggle against Octavian (Augustus Caesar). These Staters of near
pure gold weigh about 8.5 g rams and depict a procession scene copied directly from one of
Brutus'silver Denarii which he struck as a moneyer in 54 BC early in his political career. The
reverse depicts the Roman eagle holding a wreath of victory in one claw, similar to Roman
Republic silver and gold motifs. The monogram BR for Brutus appears to the left of the obverse
figures, and the dead king's name KOSON beneath. The middle figure is the ancestor Lucius
Junius Brutus who in 509 BC overthrew the last king of Rome and established the Republic.Q.
Caepio Brutus, better known as Marcus Junius Brutus, was the descendant and senator who
plotted the assassination of his friend Julius Caesar whose personal ambition was crushing the
republican government. After the fateful Ides of March, civil war broke out with Brutus, Cassius,
and the Republicans, pitted against an alliance of Julius Caesar's nephew, Octavian, and Marc
Anthony. Brutus held office in Macedonia, adjacent to the kingdom of Koson. This gold hoard
was doubtless struck 43/42 BC as military payroll for the Republican army, which was defeated
at Philippi in 42 BC Brutus fell on his own sword after the loss.
