CLASSIC WAYTE RAYMOND COIN CARDBOARD PAGES
We lucked onto an old coin shop's inventory of Wayte Raymond pages, made for 2 and 3 ring
binders. These were the state of the art in coin preservation and display. The plastic slides
allowed for seeing the obv. and rev. of each coin. Care needs to be taken not to slide the plastic
across the surfaces of the coin to avoid light scratching called "slide marks." The slide marks
were ultimately the biggest downside of these pages. The slight sulfur content of the cardboard
created some of the most beautiful toning known to exist on coins of all grades. I believe most
of these were made from the 1930s to 1964.

EGYPTIAN GOLD HOARD
COINS STRUCK BY THE KING OF COLLECTORS
From a wealthy Egyptian family in Swiss exile comes a spectacular group of Proof and
Uncirculated gold struck to commemorate the wedding of King Farouk in 1938. Farouk was
king of Egypt in a decade of despots and tyrants, the more infamous being Hitler, Mussolini,
and Franco of Spain. Farouk inherited Egypt from his father Ahmed Fuad in 1936 and pretty
much treated the country and its treasury as his royal playground. As long as he kept the Suez
Canal open for Allied transport to the Eastern reaches of the British Empire, the western
powers supported him.In 1952 the patience of the Egyptian military ran out and Farouk was
forced to abdicate in a bloodless coup. The palace entourage and old royalty were no longer
welcome in the new Egypt.
With the unlimited budget to satisfy his whims Farouk amassed the largest of coins eve r. If he
didn't have one, he wanted it. Ancient Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Persian and all medieva l
kingdoms were represented. E ve ry ru l e r, eve ry mint, eve ry va ri e t y, eve ry coin ever stru ck
a nywhere in the wo rld, eve r. E ve ry foreign coin ever stru ck, and of course eve ry U. S. coin eve r
s t ru ck .E ve ry denomination, ye a r, mint and of course his legendary pattern collection including
m a ny unique gold pattern s. The major dealers in Fra n c e, Switze rland, the Netherl a n d s, England
and the United States supplied the royal palace with consignments of hundreds of thousands of
dollars wo rth of coins when a U. S. dollar bought ten times what it does now. The dealers fo u n d
out that a package over $10,000. went to a palace bu r e a u c ra t 's office loaded with red tape, and
p r o b a bly " b a k s h e e s h ," and took a year or two to get paid, so nobody cut Farouk a good deal,
and in real dollar terms he probably paid the most ever for the wo rl d 's largest collection eve r.
The clever dealers soon learned to send multiple packages of $9,500. each, since they we n t
through a different bu r e a u c ra t 's office and invoices were paid in maybe six months or so.
Farouk also collected eve ry stamp of the wo rld, snuff boxe s, objects of ve rtu, watches and
automata, telescopes, and basically any object or art wo rk with precious metals and jewe l s,
p r e fe ra bly large gold and platinum diamond studded objects, like Carl Faberge Easter eggs.
There was a massive gold stand to hold two Coca Cola bottles which had been given to him by
the company as a gift for the concession for the Egyptian bottling ri g h t s.
When Farouk left the majority of his vast holdings became the property of the new republic,
which had no interest in trinkets not of Egyptian cultural value, so his collections went to the

KING AHMED FUAD, 1922-1936, FATHER OF FAROUK

Ancient Macedonia prospered on the fringe of
the classical civilization epitomized by the
Greek city-states. The monarchy of
Macedonia was of Greek descent, and Philip
II, ruler from 359 to 336 B.C. was determined
to bring his kingdom into the mainstream of a
unified Hellenistic civilization under his
leadership. He employed great thinkers at his
court, like Aristotle to tutor his young son,
Alexander, later known as "the Great." His first
expansions absorbed neighboring Thessaly
and Thrace, whose rich mineral wealth proved
to be the paymaster to finance his
processional armies.
The gold mines of Mount Pangaeum in Thrace
yielded about 1,000 talents, or 75,000 pounds
a year. Philip, a military genius, led his own
troops into battle. Amazingly he survived an
arrow that blinded him in one eye. The
Macedonian phalanx, his "secret weapon,"
was sectioned into a 16 man by 16 man
square of armored foot soldiers, bristling with
their 14 foot long spears. The first five ranks
leveled their spears to attack the front, and
the ranks behind rested their lances skyward
on the soldiers in front to provide a barrier
against arrows. These squares of weaponry
could be deployed with infinte variety
depending on the terrain and the opposing
forces.
Philip's loss of an eye, according to Plutarch,
the ancient historian, was foretold by the
oracle of Apollo at Delphi.Philip had looked
through a peephole into his wife's, Olympias',
bedchamber, and saw her cavorting with the
god Ammon, who had assumed the form of a
serpent.Further legend claims that Alexander
himself was the offspring of this union. But
the oracle warned that Philip's eye which
viewed this god's visitation would be lost to
him.Plutarch speculates that Philip lost
interest in Olympias after that, and although
he was proud of Alexander and his son; the
bitter seeds of discontent had been sown.
Philip, also an adept diplomat and schemer,
employed various means to advance his
political ambitions. He formed alliances by
marriage, (he had at least six wives at
different times.) He helped provoke and
aggravate the traditional rivalries amongst the
Greek city-states. His gold was useful in
bribing the disaffected elements of these
southern cities. The Greeks of Athens,
Corinth, Thebes, Sparta and the other city-
states certainly had not forgotten the Persian
threat from Asia Minor, and many Greeks, led
by Isocrates of Athens, saw Philip more as an
ally than an enemy. In a display for potential
unification, Philip presided over the games in
346 B.C. at the Panhellenic sanctuary at
Delphi, sacred to Apollo. Philip himself was a
victor in the chariot race of the Olympic
games. Demosthenes of Athens, one of the
most famous orators of all time, railed
effectively against Philip and his ambitions, so
when Philip moved aggressively into Greece,
Athens and Thebes fielded an ar my to
oppose him. Too little and too late, the Greek
resistance to the Macedonians met with
complete defeat at Chaeronea in 338 B.C.
Philip's treaty with Thebes was harsh, but he
treated Athens quite easily, apparently out of
sentiment and his respect for this center of
Greek culture.
Philip's life of conquest was cut short by an
assassin's blade, for in 336 B.C. he was
murdered at a wedding feast. He had been
preparing to invade the Persian empire, so
possibly agents of the Great King organized
the plot.Plutarch believes that Olympias, an
ex-wife and mother of Alexander the Great,
was the mastermind, and friends of Alexander
that Philip and his current wife had mistreated
were the perpetrators. Plutarch also describes
another drunken feast during which Philip and
Alexander exchange angry words, Philip
came close to attacking Alexander. Whoever
the instigator, Alexander was the beneficiary.
At the age of 20 Alexander ascended to the
Macedonian throne and began his lifelong
conquest of the known world.
The coinages in the name of Philip II were vast,
and are an amazing boon to modern
collectors, since large numbers have survived
in hoards. His territories covered many
prosperous territories and city states and their
busy economies required large quantities of
coins. The name and coin designs of Philip
continued to be struck for 40 years after his
death, partly to honor his achievements, and
partly to maintain needed coinages on the
Macedonian weight standard for those
regions. Perhaps the minting of Philip's gold
staters alongside the Alexander's gold staters
celebrated Philip's victories as well as paid
the ongoing expenses of his planned attack
on the Persian empire. The gold staters of
Philip were the same 8.6 gram pure gold
standard as Alexander's.

These spectacular staters are from an amazing hoard of gold staters, bequeathed by the
Scythian King Koson's widow, from norther n Thrace, to the war chests of Brutus and his
republican allies in their struggle against Octavian (Augustus Caesar.) These staters of near
pure gold weigh about 8.5 g rams and depict a procession scene copied directly from one of
Brutus'silver denarii which he struck as a moneyer in 54 B.C. early in his political career. The
reverse depicts the Roman eagle holding a wreath of victory in one claw, similar to Roman
Republic silver and gold motifs. The monogram BR for Brutus appears to the left of the obv.
figures, and the dead king's name KOSON beneath. The middle figure is the ancestor Lucius
Junius Brutus who in 509 B.C. overthrew the last king of Rome and established the Republic.
Q.Caepio Brutus, better known as Marcus Junius Brutus, was the descendant and senator who
plotted the assassination of his friend Julius Caesar whose personal ambition was crushing the
republican government. After the fateful Ides of March, Civil War broke out with Brutus, Cassius,
and the Republicans, pitted against an alliance of Julius Caesar's nephew, Octavian, and Marc
Anthony. Brutus held office in Macedonia, adjacent to the kingdom of Koson. This gold hoard
was doubtless struck 43/42 B.C. as military payroll for the Republican army, which was defeated
at Philippi in 42 B.C. Brutus fell on his own sword after the loss .
