CENTS
1793 Chain Cent, Sheldon-2, the " B e ck w i t h
C o i n ." This coin turned up in London,
England in 1891, where it was purchased by
Washington, D. C. coin dealer B. H .C o l l i n s,
who held it in his personal collection until
1 9 1 9 . He then sold it to the astute Dr.
B e ckwith for an incredible $500. Through the
2 0
t h
C e n t u ry a long line of illustri o u s
c o n n o i s s e u r s, both collectors and dealers,
included this coin in their collections. B o t h
H e n ry Chapman and B. Max Mehl kept this
coin for their personal Chain Cent. Of course
Naftzger owned this coin, but it was traded to
H e rman Halpern before Jay Pa r rino acquired
the fa bulous Naftzger collection. This Chain
Cent is my favo rite 1793 cent of all which I
h ave seen simply because of the near
p e r fection of the lustrous surfa c e s. It is not
fully stru ck on some of the ve ry highest
s t rands of hair over the ear, but when I tilt the
coin in the light I see the perfectly preserve d
copper surfaces (more fragile than Mint State
gold) with shimmering cartwheel luster.
