SHOOTING KING OF CLEVE
Silver and gold medal, with top loop for suspension, awarded to "Dem Schutzen
Konige zu Cleve 1875". It was made by from two silver discs with raised gold
appliqués, which were then joined with a raised silver border. The obverse
appliqué is a coat of arms surmounted with an elegant swan. The reverse
appliqué of an oak wreath surrounds the engraved inscription. The gold and
silver contrast beautifully. EF or better. ..................................................

IRON DIE BY KEY
Huge iron die, by William H. Key, assistant die engraver at the U.S. Mint from 1864
to at least 1892. It is signed Key F(ecit) and stamped W. H. Key, Phila.PA. on the
side. Key was an accomplished engraver and his works of art include many
medals, both before and during mint employment, and several U.S. pattern dies.
Many pieces of the unattributed medallic art from the U.S. Mint in the late 1800s
are doubtless his work. The bust of Henry Clay is draped as an ancient
Roman Republican senator, and surrounded by laurel leaves, possibly as
allusion to his great service to the United States for implementing the
Compromise of 1850, and averting an immediate civil war. It is 3.5 by 4 inches
by 1 inch thick and weighs over 60 ounces. Possibly used to impress glass,
leather or wood. EF condition, some very minor oxidation....................
$3,700.
BRONZE SPHINX
Bronze jug handle decorated with a
sphinx sitting on its haunches at the
top, and with a female head at the
bottom. Jug and vase handles survive
from antiquity much more often than
the more fragile sides of the vessel.
The sphinx sits almost 3 inches high,
and the whole handle is more than 7
inches long. Roman period, 100 BC to
400 AD. VF some encrustation over
very dark green patina ...........
$377.

KINGS OF SCANDINAVIA 1448 TO 1863
Copper wall plaque, with a brass chain attached at top for suspension. This huge
piece of medallic art was created by arranging a portrait gallery of the
Oldenburg dynasty, which ruled Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Schleswig-
Holstein during different centuries. It was made by an artist named "Green" and
dated "1878". Green created this plaque by laying out a collection of beautiful
medals of these kings and making an electrotype shell of the medals, the fields
and the borders. The top border has intaglio script "Den Oldenborgshe
Kongestamme" and the fields and lower border have many engraved flowers
and leaf designs. The medals used are engraved by a number of different
artists. The early Danish kings were done by a mysterious "Wolf" in 1721,
possibly an ancestor of the Johan H. Wolff who did two of the late 1700s. Other
artists include: M. Gabbien, H. Conradsen, and P. Petersen. Actual size 10 by
12 inches. EF or better, cleaned. ...........................................................
$2,700.
PRESIDENTIAL GIFT
BATTLE OF AYACUCHO CENTENARY
Gold box weighing almost 220 grams of very pure gold, untested, but
between 18 and 24 carat. Presented in a silk lined leather covered
box, with gold leaf embossed inscription "Augusto B. Leguia,
Presidente Del Peru, A La Senora, Marcelle De Ayala, Embajadora
Del Paraguay, Centenario De Ayacucho 1924" about 3.5 inches
long and 3 inches high. The lower part is very early Spanish
colonial manufacture, suggesting 1600s goldsmithing, and
the lid is 1920s, but with matching gold color. The battle of
Ayacucho in the highlands of the Viceroy of Peru in 1824 resulted
in the final surrender of the Spanish Colonial army in the Americas
and marked a new era for Latin American democracies. An
amazing gift from the president of Peru to the lady ambassador
from Paraguay, suggesting perhaps more than a political affiliation.
