Athens, 390-300 B.C., silver Tetradrachm, about 17 gms. The century of
Aristotle and Alexander the Great. All are test cut. The test cuts were applied
with a chisel by a government official in the Athenian marketplace, or Agora. If
he were caught slacking on the job he got 40 lashes, which were sometimes
fatal, usually debilitating and always painful. If a merchant refused a properly
tested silver coin he had all his wares confiscated. The ancient Fouree', or
copper core coin with a very heavy silver clad layer was a common ancient
counterfeiter's activity, and in Athens there had actually been an official issue
of plated owls at the end of the Peloponesian War c. 405 B.C. when the
treasury was depleted of silver. Uncleaned have a dark purple overall layer of
"horn silver." Cleaned will be shiny white with grainy surfaces. Your choice. All
