ALL GOLD, MANY NEW PURCHASES
From a we a l t hy Egyptian family related to the ex-king Farouk in Swiss
exile comes a spectacular group of Proof and Uncirculated gold stru ck to
c o m m e m o rate the wedding of King Farouk in 1938. Also included in this
gold hoard were earlier issues from Egypt of Fa r o u k 's father King Fuad, the
B ritish protectorate of Egypt, and of the Ottoman sultans. Farouk was king
of Egypt in a decade of despots and tyra n t s, the more infamous being
H i t l e r, Mussolini, and Franco of Spain. Farouk inherited Egypt from his
father Ahmed Fuad in 1936 and pretty much treated the country and its
t r e a s u ry as his royal play gr o u n d . As long as he kept the Suez Canal open
for Allied tra n s p o rt to the Eastern reaches of the British Empire, the
we s t e rn powers supported him. In 1952, the patience of the Egyptian
m i l i t a ry ran out and Farouk was forced to abdicate in a bloodless coup. T h e
palace entourage and old royalty were no longer welcome in the new
E g y p t .
With the unlimited budget to satisfy his whims, Farouk amassed the
largest collection of coins and medals eve r. If he didn't have one, he wa n t e d
i t . Ancient Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Persian and all medieval kingdoms
were represented. E ve ry ru l e r, eve ry mint, eve ry va ri e t y, eve ry pattern ,
eve ry coin ever stru ck anywhere in the wo rld, eve r. E ve ry foreign coin eve r
s t ru ck, and of course eve ry U. S. coin ever stru ck .E ve ry denomination, ye a r,
mint and, of course, his legendary pattern collection, including many unique
gold pattern s. The major dealers in Fra n c e, Switze rland, the Netherl a n d s,
England and the United States supplied the royal palace with consignments
of hundreds of thousands of dollars wo rth of coins when a U.S. d o l l a r
bought ten times what it does now. Coin dealers found out that a pack a g e
over $10,000 in value went to a palace bu r e a u c ra t 's office loaded with red
t a p e, and probably " b a k s h e e s h ," or a bribe was required to expedite the
s a l e, or it took a year or two to get paid, so nobody cut Farouk a good deal,
and in real dollar terms he probably paid the most ever for the wo rl d 's
largest collection eve r. The clever dealers soon learned to send mu l t i p l e
p a ckages of $9,500. each, since they went through a different bu r e a u c ra t 's
office and invoices were paid in maybe six months or so.
Farouk also collected eve ry stamp of the wo rld, snuff boxe s, objects of
v i rt u e, watches and automata, telescopes, porn o gra p hy, automobiles and
basically any object or art wo rk with precious metals and jewe l s, prefe ra bl y
large gold and platinum diamond studded objects, like Carl Faberge Easter
e g g s. There was a massive gold stand to hold two Coca Cola bottles which
had been given to him by the company as a gift for the concession for the
Egyptian bottling ri g h t s.
When Farouk left, the majority of his vast holdings became the propert y
of the new republ i c, which had no interest in tri n kets not of Egyptian cultura l
va l u e, so his collections went to the auction bl o ck . Abe Kosoff wrote a
wonderful series for Coin Wo rl d about his adventures at one of the biggest
g i ve aways of all time at the palace auction.

1922 Fuad Civilian Bust Gold 100 Piastres,
melts for $65 at 273 gold. These are AU
details, but have all been sweated. Some
enterprising person would take a quantity
of gold coins and shake them up in a cloth
sack for hours or days. (The slave or
peasant doing the hard physical labor did
the sweating.) The cloth sack was later
burned and the accumulated gold dust
was recovered from the ashes. The results
leave the coins with zillions of tiny, tiny
nicks making the surfaces look almost
matte like. Catalogs in Krause in VF for

CERTIFIED GOLD FOR BRUTUS
"Et tu, Brutè?"
Shakespeare: Julius Caesar's
dying words.
These spectacular Staters are from an amazing
hoard of gold Staters, bequeathed by the
Scythian King Koson's widow, from norther n
Thrace, to the war chests of Brutus and his
republican allies in their struggle against
Octavian (Augustus Caesar).These Staters of
near pure gold weigh about 8.5 grams and
depict a procession scene copied directly from
one of Brutus'silver Denarii which he struck as a
moneyer in 54 B.C. early in his political career.
The reverse depicts the Roman eagle holding a
wreath of victory in one cla w, similar to Roman
Republic silver and gold motifs. The monogram
BR for Brutus appears to the left of the obv.
figures, and the dead king's name KOSON
beneath. The middle figure is the ancestor
Lucius Junius Brutus, who in 509 B.C . overthrew
the last king of Rome and established the
Republic.Q.Caepio Brutus, better known as
Marcus Junius Brutus, was the descendant and
senator who plotted the assassination of his
friend Julius Caesar whose personal ambition
was crushing the republican government.After
the fateful Ides of March, civil war broke out
with Brutus, Cassius, and the Republicans ,
pitted against an alliance of Julius Caesar' s
nephew, Octavian, and Marc Anthony. Brutus
held office in Macedonia, adjacent to the
kingdom of Koson. This gold hoard was
doubtless struck 43/42 B.C. as military payroll for
the Republican army, which was defeated at
Philippi in 42 B.C. Brutus fell on his own s word
after the loss.
